In 1877 the Colorado Central Railroad built additional rails from Longmont through Loveland and into Cheyenne, Wyo. They added a station that they built at the trestle over the Little Thompson River and named it "Berthoud" after their civil engineer and surveyor, Edward Berthoud. This station was built on the homestead of Lewis Cross who had already opened a post office in his home there and was calling it "Little Thompson". For clarity the post office changed its name from "Little Thompson" to "Berthoud". The lay of the land was not good for a railroad. Engines had a difficult time getting started after stopping here because the land went uphill in both directions because of the river drainage. Peter Turner being wise to the railroad problem plotted a new town on his homestead which was a short ways north on a bluff and in 1882- 83 the new town of Berthoud was born. The depot and post office were moved to the new location. In 2006 the population of Berthoud stood at 5055 and the town continues to grow peacefully.
