New Park for Berthoud

Mike Waggener has made an agreement to sell 75 acres of land that will make this the largest park in Berthoud.  This deal was made possible because of months of negotiations among the town, Colorado Open Lands and the Thompson School District.  The Colorado Open Lands secured a conservation easement for 35 acres from development and will monitor the area.

The site is on the Northeast corner of Mountain Avenue and County Road 17.  The area will hold trails, a future recreation center, two ball fields, a water feature and possibly an amphitheater or band shell.  The Thompson School District is interested in acquiring a few acres to build a track and athletic field for Turner Middle School.

The town of Berthoud will be hiring a consultant to study the land’s features.  Waggener said, “He decided to sell the land as more homes and businesses moved into west Berthoud.”  “It was in the path of development” he said, adding that “It was becoming more difficult to farm the area with all the development.”  The family also farms 960 acres east of Berthoud and it has become a hassle over the years to transport machinery between the two sites.

When the park is finished, it will serve as a central gathering place for residents and community events for years to come.  This is the biggest park Berthoud has and it will take several years to develop.
